All this month UK MMA News will be sounding the war drums for what is likely to be the most exciting event to happen in UK MMA for the year 2010.
For a long time now speculation and debate has been hammered out on the internet and in the media over who is ‘THE’ top UK heavyweight of today. Opinions often differ and rarely match. Now a Tournament is in place that will be the deciding factor on who is the top UK heavyweight and will win the £15,000 purse on offer.
Old rivalries will be stoked and those waiting to avenge previous loses may well now get that chance, as this will not be the first time some of these guys have met.
James Thompson has let it be known many times how he wants a rematch with Neil Grove since that round 1 KO in Cage Rage 22. Neil Grove has spoken before to UK MMA News of his desire for a rematch with Rob Broughton since his decision loss at Cage Rage 25. We have Martin Thompson who is coming off a previous loss to Neil Grove, but on the other hand he previously beat UK legend Tengiz Tedoradze who incidentally is the only fighter to have defeated Rob Broughton out of the 8 men.
Some of these fighters have stated reasons for the loss and claimed improvement since then, so now will be the chance once and for all to bring them all into one tournament, with just one winner.
Beyond the winners purse of £15,000 their also stands the possibility that anyone who puts on an impressive performance could well become an attractive signing prospect to some of MMA’s biggest promotions. When we spoke to Sol Gilbert late last year on his motivation for doing event, he stated ‘I’ve just put myself into two pairs of shoes a fighter trying to get signed by the UFC and the UK MMA fan. The fighter who is trying to get signed would love the chance to prove he is the pound for pound best un-signed fighter in his division and with this event he can claim that. The UK MMA Fan gets a chance to see the best of UK’s talent battle it out in one night.. it’s like Christmas all round.’.
All this month leading up to the event itself we will provide fighter profiles + news and opinions from the fighters themselves.
First up this Friday will be Rob “The Bear” Broughton.
