Rivers, Chargers, ease some pain by beating Broncos 21-13

The San Diego Chargers had built a 21-10 lead, but after Anderson's touchdown, the Broncos were a two-point conversion away from making it a three-point game.

Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian (13) is brought down by San Diego Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa during the first half of an NFL football game Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, in San Diego. The Broncos face the Chargers again in 2 weeks and they also have 2 games upcoming against the Oakland Raiders, who also have a speedy pass rush.

The five-time defending AFC West champion Broncos (4-2) were mostly sluggish behind Trevor Siemian, who was back at quarterback after rookie Paxton Lynch struggled in a loss to Atlanta.

With 15 seconds left and his San Diego Chargers trying to hold onto a 21-13 lead against Denver, embattled coach Mike McCoy hunched over with his head in his hands.

The ratings for the game weren't terrific, at least by TNF standards - Broncos-Chargers averaged a 9.9 overnight rating according to CBS/NFL Net, down 5 percent from the Falcons-Saints game previous year.

The defense trotted on, only to watch the Chargers pad their lead to 19-3 on field goals. DeCamillis said he did speak to Kubiak on Thursday in the hours before the game in San Diego. "I was nearly like a substitute teacher". After I got done with the game, I felt pretty good. Donald Stephenson and Max Garcia both had the worst game I have ever seen them play. I have a new respect for that.

"I'm feeling much better and am thankful for everyone's thoughts and well-wishes", Kubiak said earlier this week, in a statement. "I think we're coming out too slow".

Siemian is the epitome of a game manager at quarterback and that was on full display on Thursday night.

"We won the game It's a great thing", McCoy said Friday. But at the same time, you just carry on. He became the all-time leader in passing yards for the San Diego Chargers organization, passing Dan Fouts (43,040 yards).

The Chargers had to settle for Josh Lambo's career-high four field goals of 37, 21, 31 and 32 yards the rest of the way.

All five of their offensive linemen were whistled for penalties. Fumbles by receivers Jordan Taylor and Demaryius Thomas thwarted comeback attempts.

Receiver Emmanuel Sanders left the game briefly in the fourth quarter with a hip injury, but returned to finish the game. He is scheduled to return to the team Monday. Not after an unraveling and not before a reunion with the Brock Osweiler on "Monday Night Football" on October 24 when they play the Houston Texans. Kubiak was ordered by doctors to take the week off after suffering a complex migraine Sunday.

Okung was hooked up to an IV as he was carted to the ambulance. By 11 p.m. PT, Okung was released from the hospital and cleared to return to Denver with the team. Okung sustained a concussion during the game. The overall stat line doesn't look awful for the Broncos quarterback, but a vast majority of his stats came in the 4th quarter while the team was down three scores. "We lost two games in a row twice past year, and it turned out pretty good". I think the franchise suffers from the fact that they are being haunted by relocation.
