The wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour began to subside late in the afternoon, and the forecast was close to perfection for the rest of the weekend, with mild temperatures and hardly any wind. They figure there is an addendum to the old saying that the Masters does not begin until the back nine on Sunday.

The four-time major victor hit a superb pitch to three feet but missed the par putt to leave himself five shots off the lead. But he had birdies on two of his first four holes and rolled in a 30-footer on the ninth for his third birdie.

"I putt well here, even though sometimes I'm not considered a great putter, I putt very well here", shrugged Couples.

Over in 'Mercedesville, ' the luxury auto maker has not just set up a Masters corporate hospitality headquarters but rather a village of mansions anchored by a lavish multi-deck pavilion that serves as a restaurant/entertainment center on the Savannah River in Augusta's posh River Island neighborhood. The leaderboard is forecasting something hot and fierce, with all kinds of possibilities.

Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia are at four under.

Fowler came out with the best round of the day, mixing an eagle (on the par-five second hole), four birdies and a bogey.

Couples will be paired on Saturday (April 8) with 22-year-old Spaniard Jon Rahm in the fourth-to-last group.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Fans of dominant, wire-to-wire performances and runaway winners, this Masters is not for them.

Adam Scott, who played with Kisner, and Jordan Spieth both shot 69 and are at even along with three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson. The latter seemed all but done after a dispiriting 75 Thursday. But he struggled on the front nine for a second straight day, following the 39 he shot Thursday with a 38 to fall back.

"I think I'm in a good position with three rounds to go and we will see how it goes". I couldn't be aggressive with the putter because I was always just above the hole.

To this point, the wind has been providing the chills and goosebumps.

Rickie Fowler has enjoyed a strong showing over the first two rounds. On the par-4 10th hole, Garcia made a bogey after hitting his first drive into the trees and hitting a provisional drive that he ultimately didn't need to play. He holed a bunker shot for a birdie on the par-5 second hole and added a birdie at No.3 to quickly get to 3-under for the round and 2-under for the tournament. There are still 36 more holes left to go - a long way in this tournament and I know what can happen, good and bad, around this golf course. "So luckily it hit the center of the hole", he said.

Defending champion Danny Willett headlines the list of players who missed the cut.

The bogey five on the 18th arose when his ball rebounded off the flagstick. "I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself, but I'd be lying to say it's not a great feeling and a great spot to be".

So is Couples, reprising his uncanny knack of contending here year after year.

"I've holed the winning putt [in the Masters] a million times", Pieters said of his boyhood dreams. I would expect one of the leaders to shoot in the 60s, so that means McIlroy has no margin for error if he is to contend for the title.
