State of the Air

"Everyone has a fundamental right to breathe healthy air", American Lung Association CEO Harold P. Wimmer, said.

Air quality in New Hampshire is improving but can still be better, according to an annual study by the American Lung Association.

Elsewhere in the state, Cincinnati and Columbus had those cities' best-ever report, reaching their fewest high ozone and particle pollution days and lowest year-round particle levels.

A new report released by the American Lung Association found that a majority of California counties received a failing grade for air quality, with many in Northern California sitting near the bottom of the list. Lawrence and Westmoreland Counties earned passing grades of D after receiving F's in last year's report.

All NC counties reported received an A or B grade for particle pollution. They say to drive less, use less electricity, don't burn wood or trash and make sure your local school system requires clean school buses. They can even cause lung cancer, and early death.

Federal standards are only part of the reason North Carolina's air has improved in recent years.

In addition, Hartford County continued to be one of 82 USA counties with the lowest level of short-term particle pollution. Short-term particle spikes can be extremely unsafe and even lethal.

Bakersfield topped the national list for the number of unhealthy days for short-term particle pollution and came in second for unhealthy days for ozone pollution and year-round particle pollution levels. This year's report covers data from 2013 to 2015. "That will certainly result in lower levels of particle pollution, but we know that these extreme events are becoming the new normal".

The Air Pollution Control District along with the County of San Luis Obispo and the California Air Resources Board have been working to mitigate particle pollution problems in the area for years now, Allen said.

"However, this report adds to the evidence that ongoing changes in our climate make it harder to protect human health". The nation, and Montana, must continue to reduce emissions that worsen climate.

Worst Ozone Pollution in the U.S.

Air quality in the Salt Lake metro area - and throughout Utah - actually got worse, Nolen said, but other urban areas such as Reno experienced historically bad air quality during the 2013-2015 period.

Almost four in 10 people live in a city where pollution levels are too risky to breathe.

"At the same time, we recognize that not every area of the country is in that same position", he said.

Despite California's strict environmental laws, the state's soaring population and topography allow air pollution to overcome them, according to Paul Billings of the American Lung Association.

Particle pollution is a combination of both minuscule liquid and solid particles circulating in the air.
