Tar Heels get it right this time, bring home the title

Gonzaga's Nigel Williams-Goss (5) reacts as he walks off the court after the finals of the Final Four NCAA college basketball tournament against North Carolina, Monday, April 3, 2017, in Glendale, Ariz. That Villanova victory over the Tar Heels pulled in about 17.8 million viewers over three Turner nets in the 9-11 PM ET time period.

Now, that one call wasn't what won North Carolina its latest championship. I can't even describe my feeling right now, but I'm just glad I was able to do something with this team just because of our personality and what we went through.

"So for me, I felt like God was calling me to come back here", he continued.

For what it's worth, the G.O.A.T. proved prescient: Including that Duke game, UNC finished the season 8-1 en route to its sixth championship - the same number Jordan won during his National Basketball Association career.

Perhaps the most important player UNC fans should be watching is Joel Berry.

As the clock wound down, then the buzzer sounded, Chapel Hill's team finally got the redemption it wanted a year ago and the win it wanted for itself this season.

The only other player scoring in double-digits for the Bulldogs was Josh Perkins, who finished with 13 points with three 3-pointers.

The foul line became the trendiest spot in the Phoenix area thanks to the officials in the second half.

Williams-Goss scored 23 points in the semifinal win over SC.

"Talking to [Syracuse coach Jim] Boeheim earlier in the week, he told me it will crush you if you don't win it", Few said.

"I wish it got no attention here, because this should be about the kids", he said Monday night.

Just reading that makes you want to beat your head against the wall, doesn't it? "Everybody was always encouraging me".

UNC's senior power forward Kennedy Meeks said he wasn't surprised by Hicks' performance. I know that I did nothing wrong. "He's my close friend. Isaiah is definitely a silent leader and you can see that by the way he played tonight".

Williams said he was not sure if they would be invited, but was non-committal about whether he would go or not.

"Isaiah, my boy has been struggling like a dog, but tonight he looked like a greyhound there a couple of times there at the end", Williams said. And he had like 34 points, 30 rebounds. "I don't think I should be mentioned in the same sentence with him".

"He didn't really give that to us, but he was big for us and made a couple of big, big baskets down the stretch". Berry missed his free throws, but Carolina retained possession because of the flagrant foul, and retook the lead when Tony Bradley rebounded his blocked shot and scored to put North Carolina in front 54-52. "But those last three minutes I think we made plays that ended up calling the game. They won this game with their defense, quite frankly". On a night when JustinJackson couldn't get his offense going, it was Joel Berry who turned things up a notch, gimpy ankles and all.

The Tar Heels (33-7) followed a bad shooting night in the semifinal with an equally ice-cold performance in the final - going 4 for 27 from 3-point land and 26 for 73 overall.

Almost as shocking as the offensive struggles UNC had in the first half were the struggles of Gonzaga big man Przemek Karnowski.

But in another sense, I viewed Gonzaga's success as a ray of hope for the BYU basketball team that I have watched for so many years. I knew we had a chance to come back and do some huge things. You still have to officiate the game of basketball, and that's what they did.

"I think of Coach Smith, there's no question", Williams said. To say everything went right for them at this Final Four would not be the truth.

Williams, at age 66, is also the same age that Smith was when he called it a career at North Carolina.

At halftime, UNC was getting outrebounded 25-23. The Tar Heels rank third in Pomeroy's ratings and 16th in defensive efficiency, but they own a slight edge over the Bulldogs in offensive efficiency (seventh vs. 12th, respectively). A program forfeits that status when they win a national title and churn out first-round NBA draft picks. "And for us we're just happy we came out on top, and this is an incredible feeling".
