Juventus eye Champions League final after 2-0 win at Monaco

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice as Juventus delivered a hammer blow to Monaco's Champions League hopes.

But Higuain ruthlessly finished two fine Dani Alves assists, sweeping the Brazilian's back heel in on 29 minutes. "I didn't expect Dani Alves to backheel it, but when he did it I just went for it".

Those two saves were more than Buffon had to make from Luis Suarez and Neymar in the previous round - combined across two legs.

After all, check out their record in the 2016-17 season in all competitions so far...

Juventus were enormous in all areas against a Monaco side who have lit up Europe this season with their brand of attacking football.

Before the game they had scored in all but one of their Champions League fixtures this season.

The 39-year-old, making his 149th European appearance, denied Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao in the first half, then produced a stunning fingertip stop from Valere Germain late on.

The Serie A champions visit the Stade Louis II on Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Moments before his second goal, he was near his own penalty area, harrying and hassling Monaco's attack.

A 3-1 defeat to third-placed Nice last weekend means that PSG must rely on Monaco slipping up if they are to stand any chance of lifting a fifth straight Ligue 1 crown.

"We lacked a little bit of experience, but most importantly of all we weren't clinical enough in front of goal", Mbappe was quoted as saying by UEFA.

They look machine-like in their winning approach.

With Real Madrid in a similar position as the Turin-based side after their first leg, it is likely that it will be a Madrid-Juventus clash in the final on June 3.

Midfielder Bernardo Silva also acknowledged the 2015 Champions League runners-up's superiority, saying: "We gave everything, but today Juventus played a lot better than us, they were superior".

Buffon has been a big factor in keeping teams at bay, and believes that it is his motivation and desire to be the best that keeps him playing at the highest level.

Feeding off such quality was Higuain, who refused to be overshadowed by the much-hyped Mbappe in the battle of the goalscorers. It's a shame that we conceded first as that goal was avoidable.

"We had more possession, we played more in their last 30 metres".

Juventus press hard to score the second goal but Monaco defense managed to hold them till the second half.

A big reason for Juventus' success has no doubt been goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. "They created a couple of good chances after we took the lead, but Gigi was there to save again so there is plenty to be happy about".

"I work hard every day for this objective".
