Russia vs Portugal: how and where to watch

The two Silvas - neither of them started in Sunday's 2-2 draw against Mexico in Kazan - brought a freshness, energy and flair to Portugal, sparing Ronaldo the need to do it all himself. Portugal must win this game to have a chance at qualifying for the next round of the competition but should have a tough match against the hosts, Russia.

Cristiano Ronaldo, coming off a tumultuous week off the field, had set up Ricardo Quaresma's opening goal for Portugal, and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez hit Mexico's equalizer just before halftime.

The Russian captain and custodian, Igor Akinfeev, on his 100th appearance was vast between the sticks and made a sensational stop to deny Andre Silva in the second-half to keep his side in the game.

"Raphael was just taken to the hospital", Portugal coach Fernando Santos said after the game.

Ronaldo added: "We are calm and we have to think about the next game".

"We will play as the head coach demands".

In the 24th minute, Ronaldo was fouled outside the box but his attempt was straight at Igor Akinfeev who was making his 100th appearance for Russian Federation.

The Krasnodar striker said: "It's very hard to build a team when you have such an individual among you as everything revolves around him". "We have seen how video assistance has helped referees to make the correct decisions".

Besides the Andre Silva header saved by Akinfeev, the Portuguese also threatened to score a second when Ronaldo headed wide in the 63rd and blasted a shot over the bar shortly after.

In the 65th minute, Ronaldo had another chance, sparking a counterattack with a lengthy run and the receiving the return pass at the top of the box, but his powerful attempt was wayward and high.

Russian Federation were poor before half-time and although they improved after it, they were repeatedly forced back on the break as they committed men forward in search of an equaliser.

Captained by current world player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal will be looking to record a first-ever win on Russian soil, having registered three defeats and one draw in four previous visits.

Wednesday's games put Mexico and Portugal in the driver's seat in the Group A battle to reach the semifinals.

"Come to Russia! You will feel the best football tournament ever".

"We need to be positive, we need to be courageous".
