US Open filled with limitless possibilities, few stars

Thomas became the fifth player to shoot 63 in the U.S. Open, and the first with a score of 9 under.

He made the eagle to get his name in the record book Saturday. They were joined by Harman and Fleetwood, who each had a 70.

"That was the best shot I hit all day", the 26-year-old told BBC Sport.

Louis Oosthuizen is making the biggest move the morning in the U.S. Open at Erin Hills. There were only three other rounds in the 60s that day.

"I think the more rounds I can play, I'm hopefully going to get rid of all that stuff and hopefully strip it down to what you saw in the last six holes".

"It's still golf, you've got to make some putts", said J.B. Holmes, who is one shot off the lead.

It seems not everybody was blown away by Justin Thomas' record-breaking display in the U.S. Open. Five players are at double-digit under par through 54 holes.

Thomas started off his round with back-to-back birdies.

Rickie Fowler, on the verge of being left behind, rallied with three straight birdies and shot 68. However, two shots stood above the rest. Day, however, said he felt ready to go before flaming out early.

On Saturday, June 17th, the clover was once again getting just as much attention as the golfers competing.

If his hot pink trousers were not enough, Thomas finished in style.

"Oh gosh, Jimmy, be good", he said to caddie Jimmy Johnson when the ball was in the air.

Brian Harman leads the US Open with one round to play at Erin Hills.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", Casey said.

He might need one at this rate.

With its great length, tall fescue rough and vulnerability to wind, Erin Hills figured to give the United States Golf Association exactly what it wanted this weekend - the ultimate test of golf.

But Thomas is no stranger to records.

"I really haven't been hitting the ball well as of late", Matsuyama said.

"I obviously needed to nuke it", Thomas said of his 3-wood, which he later called his best of the round.

"I would definitely like to see it dry out a little bit".

Miller, who holds onto that 63 like Mercury Morris does the "72 Dolphins flawless record, always has an opinion, which he shared with Golf Channel after Thomas" round.

He shot 59 this year in the first round of the Sony Open, the fourth of his PGA Tour victories.

Entering this week's U.S. Open, the past six major championships have been captured by first-time winners. It took a hard turn to the right and rolled in. Then he picked up a birdie on 12 with a 9-footer. Harman made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole to hold off Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez by a stroke.

Continuing to downplay Thomas' admirable efforts in favour of trumpeting his own past glories, two-time major champion Miller added: "For one, the greatness of my round is the 63 in the last round of the U.S. Open to win by one".

"We're in a good spot", Fowler said.

But the work is not done.

Reed shot a 7-under 65 in the third round of the U.S. Open, equaling the low total of the tournament. The top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend have combined for zero majors.

Reed, who beat Rory McIlroy in the first singles contest at Hazeltine a year ago and was wearing the pants from his Ryder Cup uniform, said: "You always can take that fire from Ryder Cup and use it in other events". The only disappointment was a three-putt bogey from 35 feet on the final hole. "The setup is more like a tough tour event than a U.S. Open course". It's there that the mistake was made: Hadwin tried to play too flawless of a third shot up toward the raised putting surface. This is the first [U.S.] Open I've been exempt for.
