You may have seen fireworks stands popping up across the Valley in preparation for the holiday next week. Consumers should be mindful of the laws when purchasing and lighting them off to ensure the safety of everyone.

If you're looking to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, you won't have to look very far to find an event that fits the bill. Today only three states, Massachusetts, New Jersey and DE, completely prohibit individuals from owning and using any type of fireworks. Fireworks are not allowed in Davidson County, but rules vary in surrounding counties.

Today, the Phoenix Fire Department held a demonstration to show the dangers that fireworks can pose and remind people that just because they are permissible doesn't mean they are safe.

Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned. "Each year hundreds of people end up with severe eye injuries and burns from fireworks, and many are bystanders and children". "These injuries range from minor to life-changing, which could ultimately affect the rest of someone's life".

Read and follow all warnings and instructions.

"Firecrackers in particular are devices that can easily be misused and mishandled, so yes, we have a concern that injuries will be on the rise as a result of that", Wyman said.

■ Do not experiment with homemade fireworks and remember, alcohol and fireworks do not mix.

Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away. Holding fireworks in your pocket or bag can cause friction that may set the firework off prematurely.

· Supervise all firework activities, making sure children do not light any fireworks. Lastly, after fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding. "I mean, yeah, it looks cool to see them all going off together, but it is risky and it is better to be safe than sorry". They may be very hot and have the potential to explode.

Some children may be sensitive to the loud noises of fireworks.

Quakertown Community Day will have live entertainment, a pancake breakfast, a vehicle show, food booths, games and fireworks on Tuesday from 8 a.m.to 9 p.m.at Quakertown Memorial Park.
