On the previous Sunday, I visited Horquetas de Sarapiquí, to walk from the bridge over the San Rafael River to the "La Arrieras" Bird Observatory, which corresponds to a 4-kilometer hike between wetlands, palm and black pepper plantations, and secondary growth forest. The number of Sporophila and Volatinia (Sporophila) is enormous along the way thanks to the fact that the grasslands provide many seeds to these birds.

p> The day was very hot, something atypical for this region, even more so in the rainy season. The embarrassment was such that we almost did not observe birds, which very probably were sheltered in the shade. We were able to finish the journey but we almost did not make it.

The plants were quiet photosynthesis

This can be the area where you can more easily observe the King Vulture - Sarcoramphus papa) . There is a point of the route where already in two occasions (including this one) we have seen up to 6 individuals in the same thermal. Yesterday we counted 3 adults and 3 juvenile individuals (with darker coloration in their body). Here is a photo of each.

On the way we observe many Guaba trees (Inga spp.) With flower and this is well known to be a magnet for butterflies and hummingbirds. I had the faith to observe some flirt because I had a long time without observing one here. We were able to observe two individuals, a male and a female, here a picture of the latter.

Black-crested Coquette (Lophornis helenae)

In the afternoon we went to Calle Santa Clara, near the crossing of Rio Frio with Route 32. This place was one of my first places where I observed birds in the Caribbean and always brings me good memories of lifers and experiences. This time we saw Gray Catbird (Mimus gilvus) who had never seen it around here and then we got quite close to the Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) in the photograph.
