Selasphorus flammula is a very small hummingbird. which nestles only in the mountains of Costa Rica.

This small endemic bird lives in open areas with shrubs, moor, and edges of dwarf forests at altitudes of 1850 m from the highest peaks. It is only 7.5 cm long. The male weighs 2.5 grams and the female weighs 2.8 grams. Its black beak is short and straight.

The adult volcano hummingbird has the green bronze back and the edges of the reddish-black tail. The color of the throat varies according to the area, being gray-purple in the Cordillera de Talamanca; red in the Poás-Barva mountains; and purple-pink in the area of ​​Irazú-Turrialba. The rest of the lower parts are white. The female is similar, but her neck is white with dark spots. Young birds resemble the female, but they have beige stripes on top of the plumage.

The female is completely responsible for nest building and incubation. This one places two white eggs in their small nest between one and five meters high, in the bushes or in a root.
