40 After this, the cupbearer, or his attendant came to the king, and also the baker, offended his master, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh, or king, was angry with these two officials, the chief of the cupbearers and the chief of the bakers, and sent them prisoners to the house of the captain of the guard, where the prison was. It was the same place where Joseph was imprisoned. The captain of the guard charged Joseph to attend to these officials, and they spent much time in prison. One night the two prisoners, the cupbearer and the baker, each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. In the morning, when Joseph came to see them, he found them very worried;

"We had a dream and there is no one to explain what it means," they replied. >

- And is not God giving the interpretations? Asked Joseph. Come, tell me what you dreamed.

Then the chief of the cupbearers told his dream to Joseph with these words: -In my dream I saw a vine, which had three branches. And the vine sprouted and threw flowers, and the flowers became clusters of ripe grapes. I had the cup of Pharaoh in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them in the cup.

And Joseph said to him:

-The dream of you means this: the three branches are three days, and within three days the pharaoh will review your case and put it back in his work, and you will give the cup to Pharaoh again just as he did before. When this happens, remember me, and please tell Pharaoh about me to get me out of this place. Have mercy on me! I was robbed of the land of the Hebrews, and I do not deserve to be in prison because I have done nothing wrong.

- For my part, I dreamed that I had three baskets of white bread over my head. The basket above had a large assortment of cakes for Pharaoh, but the birds came to eat from the basket that was on my head.

Then Joseph answered:

-The dream of you means this: the three baskets are three days, and within three days the pharaoh will review your case and have him hanged from a tree, and the birds will eat his flesh.

The third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he made a great feast for all his officials. In front of his guests, Pharaoh ordered the captain of the cupbearers and the chief of the bakers to be released from prison. The cupbearer put him back into his work, and he again gave the cup to Pharaoh as before; but the baker ordered him to hang, as Joseph had interpreted. However, the cupbearer did not remember Joseph again.
