Panterpe insignis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The colibri insigne (Panterpe insignis) is a species of bird in the Trochilidae family. It is a hummingbird of regular size that only reproduces in the mountains of Costa Rica and in the west of Panama. It is the only member of the genus Panterpe .

It is common for this mountain bird to abound in the canopy above 1,400 meters, found in the thickets of forest and clearing.


It has little coloration on the flanks.

This bird measures 11 inches long and weighs 5.7 grams. It has a straight black beak and dark legs. The adult Hummingbird, has bright green plumage on the body, blue tail, and a white spot behind the eye. It often looks dark, but when the light comes in the right angle, you see a bright blue crown, a bright yellow border around the orange throat, and a blue patch on the chest. The sexes are similar, but young birds have reddish plumage on their heads. Your call is a high pitched chirp.
