The Complete Card line up is:

Lightweight (154 lbs./-70 kg): Scott Hewitt vs. Yura Ivlev

M-1 CHALLENGE Semi Final Matchup for Russia VS. England

clip_image002

Amsterdam, Holland — After compiling a 3-0 team record and a 13-2 individual record en route to a Group D title in the 2009 “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” (www.M-1Global.com), Team Russia Legion is locked and loaded as it ramps up for its run at the M-1 Challenge Championship Cup.

First, Russia Legion must win its upcoming best-of-five series vs. Team England on Sept. 26 during the M-1 Challenge semifinals, which will be broadcast live on Internet PPV via M-1Global.com. While Legion enters the matchup as the odds-on favorite, the never-say-day team of fighters from Britain have nothing to lose and everything to gain, as Legion must deal with the added competing in its home city of Rostov, Russia.

They will face a much-maligned Team England squad that went 2-1 during the regular season with a 10-5 individual record that was just good enough to edge out Team Japan and take first place in Group A.

England battled injuries during the course of the season and was plagued by inconsistency, as it shocked Team Japan winning by a 4-1 score this past April in Tokyo and then shut out Team Spain 5-0 on Aug. 15 in August. However, sandwiched in between its two dominating performances was a dismal 4-1 upset loss to Team France this past June in Kansas City.

When the ‘09 season began, England was picked to finish behind both France and Japan in the standings but was able to defy the odds through outstanding coaching from Dave Butlin and Aaron Chatfield along with having the best team chemistry of all the 16 teams that participated in this year’s challenge. and

But England will face a Russia Legion team that has become a powerhouse factory for up-and-coming fight prospects. Led by welterweight Magomed Shikshabekov, voted the number eight best MMA prospect in Europe by Sherdog.com, Legion finished tied as the ‘09 M-1 Challenge number one overall team. Additionally, its “B” team is currently 3-0 in Group B of the M-1 Selection, a year-long team-based competition featuring the top fight gyms in Russia qualifying for the right to represent its home country in the 2010 M-1 Challenge.

Legion officials confirmed earlier this week that Shikshabekov, 4-0, will be taking on Team England knockout specialist Simon Phillips, 8-3, during the Sept. 26 semifinals. Joining Shikshabekov will be lightweight Yuri Ivlev (10-5), middleweight Ansar Chalangov (9-4), light heavyweight Besiki Gerenava (8-1-1), and heavyweight Akhmed Sultanov (8-3).

Out of all the variations of lineups Legion has fielded in the M-1 Challenge this year, M-1 officials believe that its semifinal lineup is perhaps the most potent roster it has fielded in the last two years.

Team England manager Ian Dean knows his fighters are in for a war.

“Without a doubt the Legion team is a top class and immensely strong outfit,” Dean told M-1Global.com. “You don’t go 3-0 and 13-2 in the M-1 Challenge by being a mediocre team. Their overall depth is phenomenal and unlike many other sides in the competition they truly are a team as well.”

Dean is especially impressed by Legion’s overall depth and the tough choices it had to make when finalizing its roster for Sept. 26. However, he sees Legion’s decision to stack its lineup as a sign of respect for Team England.

“They have already been able to put out a reserve team last Saturday in the M-1 Selection and have left out some tough guys for Sept. 26 as well such as Rustam Khabilov, Sergey Kornev, and Gadzimurad Omarov,” he remarked. “That speaks volumes about just how tough the Legion are in my opinion, but it also shows the respect the Legion have for Team England, as they have really thought about their line-up and have put a top quality team out to face us. But I know Dave (Butlin) and the guys wouldn’t want anything less.”

In addition to the highly-anticipated Shikshabekov vs. Phillips matchup at welterweight, the Legion vs. England semifinal showdown will also feature Chalangov taking on UK submission specialist Matt “12 Gauge” Thorpe. Thorpe, a lanky middleweight at 6′4” and owner of notable victories in his career over Raymond Jarman and Che’ Mills, could be facing the toughest test of his career in Chalangov.

Chalangov is not only a veteran of M-1 and BodogFIGHT, but is one of the few Russian fighters to have been given an opportunity to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. While his UFC record stands at 0-2, Chalangov was not given any layups after being matched up against both Josh Koscheck and Thiago Alves in his lone Octagon appearances. And in spite of his UFC losses, Chalangov is considered one of the toughest fighters in all of Russia due to holding notable victories in his career over Dennis “Superman” Hallman, Dave Strasser, and Jason Jones.

Other Russia Legion vs. England matchups include Ivlev vs. former English football player Scott Hewitt; Gerenava vs. Lee Austin, and Sultanov testing his mettle against one of the best heavyweights in all of M-1, Rob “The Bear” Broughton.

Russia Legion vs. England will be a hotly-contested matchup that could come down to the wire with Legion’s “homefield advantage” possibly proving the difference. However, Dean believes his Team England has the fortitude to overcome the odds yet again.

“[Fighting in Rostov] sounds like a daunting prospect, but England has already defeated Team Japan in their backyard… Of course the Russians will have home field advantage but I honestly don’t think it will affect the guys.”

The current fight-by-fight lineup for Russia Legion’s best-of-five semifinal matchup vs. Team England is as follows:

ENGLAND VS. RUSSIA LEGION -

1. Lightweight (154 lbs./-70 kg): Scott Hewitt vs. Yura Ivlev
2. Welterweight (167.2 lbs./-76 kg): Simon Phillips vs. Magomed Shikshabekov
3. Middleweight (184.8 lbs./-84 kg): Matt Thorpe vs. Ansar Chalangov
4. Light Heavyweight (204.8 lbs./-93 kg): Lee Austin vs. Besiki Gerenava
5. Heavyweight (+204.8 lbs./+93 kg): Rob Broughton vs. Akhmed Sultanov

Team England Ready to Prove Critics Wrong One more Time.

clip_image002

Amsterdam, Holland – Adversity in sports has a tendency to bring teammates closer together, and for the much-maligned Team England, the hurdles they have faced during the 2009 edition of the “M-1 CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY AFFLICTION” (www.M-1Global.com) have made its quintet as thick as thieves.

The adversity Team England has faced has come in the form of constant criticism about its selection of fighters populating its five-man roster in the year-long M-1 Challenge, an International team-based competition modeled after the World Cup.

Interestingly enough, the skepticism it has faced throughout the ‘09 season has not come from the outside, but rather from many pundits and critics hailing from their homeland. From day one, team manager Ian Dean and coaches Aaron Chatfield and Dave Butlin have faced questions about the caliber of team they assembled for England’s maiden voyage in the Challenge.

“I am used to people doubting my ability to do my job as the UK, as the MMA scene is a very nasty little place,” said Dean during a recent interview with M-1Global.com. “However I was shocked by the level of criticism that Dave and Aaron received from people who just don’t understand how the Challenge works.

“People have argued that we have left out a lot of high profile names in the UK. But people don’t understand there are procedures, pay scales and structures you have to follow and not everyone is going to work under those conditions. Also other fighters have deals with other groups in the UK that would make working in the Challenge quite difficult.”

Logistics aside, Dean, Chatfield, and Butlin have proven the critics wrong, going 2-1 in team matchups and 10-5 in individual play, earning Team England a Group A title and a playoff berth in the ‘09 M-1 Challenge semifinals on Sept. 26 in Rostov, Russia (to be available on Internet PPV via M-1Global.com).

England had been in a dead heat with Team Japan and Team France to qualify for the playoffs, but delivered in the clutch during the M-1 Challenge regular season finale on Aug. 15 by racking up a 5-0 victory over Team Spain.

But set to face Russia Legion in the semifinals on Sept. 26 in Legion’s home town of Rostov, Russia, England once again finds itself in the underdog role. Complicating matters further is that its standout light heavyweight, Tom Blackledge, a coach on the upcoming tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter, will be sidelined due to injury.

“Having Blackledge ruled out of the semifinal is a huge blow,” Dean stated. “I think Tom is the best light heavyweight in this year’s M-1 Challenge and having him on the team is like having a win on the score sheet before the five bout series even starts.”

With Blackledge out, Team England has enlisted the services of Lee Austin, a capable veteran who has faced a recent stretch of rough luck having lost his last two fights. However, Austin has not competed in over a year and Team England officials believe he has improved greatly as a fighter and is ready to re-boot his career on the world stage.

Joining Austin will be Team England stalwarts Simon Phillips, Matt Thorpe, and standout heavyweight Rob Broughton, who is returning to the M-1 Challenge after a one-fight hiatus after having competed Aug. 28 during “HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH.”

While losing Blackledge hurts, Dean is excited about England once again having the services of Broughton.

“It’s a major boost to have the number one heavyweight in this year’s M-1 Challenge back on our team,” he said. “Like Blackledge, I feel Rob gives us the security of having a virtual win on the scoresheet before the series even starts… He is keen to get back to action and increase his unbeaten M-1 Challenge record.”

Rounding out the squad will be lightweight Scott Hewitt, a former professional English football player who made his Team England debut during the regular season finale on Aug. 15 in Holland. Hewitt joined Team England late in the season after Ian Butlin was forced to retire due to multiple facial fractures.

Hewitt’s selection caused a great deal of consternation within the UK MMA scene and the naysayers appeared to be valid in their concern following his slow start vs. Team Spain’s Jose Roque. After losing round one, a stern pep talk from his corner lit a fire under Hewitt, who came out like a ball of fire in round two and finished Roque with an armbar submission just 1:35 into the round.

Despite the fact that Hewitt improved to 2-0 in his young career, there had been some speculation that England would make a change at lightweight for the playoffs.
Not so, said Dean.

“Scott Hewitt went out there in Holland and tapped out a BJJ brown belt and showed tremendous courage to come back from a tough first round, as he tried to shed a lot of ring rust. Dave Butlin picks the team and him and Aaron coaches them…. I have full faith in my coaches and I have seen Scott fight in the past and trusted my coaches’ opinion… To reward Scott’s fantastic performance in Holland with a trip to the bench for Russia would not have been the right thing to do.”

The loyalty and trust Dean, Butlin, and Chatfield have shown their team has created one of the most tight-knit squads in the entire M-1 Challenge. England’s team chemistry has been a big reason why it has been able to overachieve this season. And while England will be sacrificing the “home field advantage” vs. Russia Legion on Sept. 26 in Rostov, Dean believes the bond shared by Team England will once again allow them to defy the odds and prove the critics wrong yet again.

“Team England has been so strong because of the bond the guys have with each other,” he said. “They train together; they know each other; and they trust and respect each other. We are a real team and each guy wants to win the M-1 Challenge in a big way. It means everything to us and the criticism they have received as a unit has only driven them more.”

M-1 Challenge: Team England Primed and Ready for Spain

Team England are primed and psyched to take out rival Group A opponents Spain and secure a semi-final place at the M-1 Global Challenge this coming weekend on the 14th and 15th of August.

To stand a good chance of getting through to the semi’s they will need to push for a result of 4-1 or better still 5-0 against rivals Spain. This will position Team England well as long as Japan beat France or France manage no higher result then 3-2. Any more then 3-2 could be messy with head to head team challenges which would result in France going through from their previous victory over England in June.
